Why a 20% final and a 60% final require very different target scores
The exam weight controls how strongly the final affects the course total. A target needs to be considered together with the completed portion.
Final grade calculator →Compare two course structures
Start with a current grade of 80 and a target overall grade of 85. If the final is worth 20%, the required score is 105. If it is worth 60%, the required score is about 88.33. The same five-point improvement in the overall grade requires a much larger exam-score difference when the exam has little weight.
Calculate the value of one exam point
At a 20% weight, one additional exam point adds 0.2 points to the course total. At a 60% weight, it adds 0.6. That makes it unsafe to copy a target from another course merely because the current average looks the same. Compare the assessment structures before deciding what a result means for planning.
Check whether one remaining component is a valid model
This tool treats the remaining portion as a single weighted final component. If both assignments and an exam remain, combine or model them according to the syllabus rather than silently ignoring one. Check rounding and minimum-pass rules as well. A displayed requirement of 88.33 does not establish the precision the institution will use when recording grades. The percentage tool can verify each weighted contribution independently.
