The calculator says you need 110% on the final. Is that an error?
A result above the exam maximum usually signals that the target is unreachable under the stated assumptions. It is a feasibility result, not necessarily a broken formula.
Final grade calculator →Check the maximum possible course grade
With a current grade of 70, a final worth 50% and a target of 90, the required score is (90 − 70 × 0.5) / 0.5 = 110. If the exam maximum is 100 and there is no extra credit, the highest possible course total is 70 × 0.5 + 100 × 0.5 = 85.
A negative result also has a meaning
With a current grade of 90, a final worth 20% and a target of 70, the formula gives −10. Under the simple weighted model, even a zero on the exam would leave 72 overall. That is not permission to skip the exam: a course can separately require attendance, submission or a minimum exam score.
Check inputs before changing the plan
Make sure a 50% exam weight was entered as 50 rather than 0.5, and that the current grade excludes the final correctly. If the inputs are right, consult the syllabus or instructor about the remaining options. Do not assume a curve or extra-credit opportunity will appear. The calculation explains the consequences of the current rules; it cannot modify them.
