Current grade 80, target 85: what score is needed on the final?
The missing five points cannot simply be added to the current grade. The final exam’s weight determines how much its score contributes.
Final grade calculator →Define the current grade correctly
Assume the current 80 represents the average for all work other than the final, and the final is worth 40% of the course. The completed portion contributes 80 × 60% = 48 points. To reach 85, the final must contribute 37 points, so the required exam score is 37 / 40% = 92.5.
Check the answer in the forward direction
Substitute 92.5 into the course formula: 80 × 0.6 + 92.5 × 0.4 = 85. If the learning platform’s displayed 80 already treats the uncompleted final as a zero, it is not the same current-grade input. Establish the denominator used by the platform before entering its number into this model.
Read the course rules first
The calculation assumes one remaining graded component and a linear weighted total. Minimum exam-pass requirements, extra credit, dropped assignments or curved grading can change the interpretation. Check the syllabus and use the result for planning rather than as a guaranteed outcome. The percentage calculator can verify weighted contributions, while the GPA tool deals with a separate course-level grade-point system after the course result is known.
