Why is an auto-loan payoff quote higher than the remaining principal?

AI Calc · Updated

A settlement quote can include interest through a specified date and applicable contractual charges. It is different from the principal balance shown on an earlier statement.

Check the settlement date first

With daily accrual, the date money is received can affect the amount due. A payoff quote may have an expiry date and a stated additional daily amount. Paying only last month’s reported principal can leave a small balance. The monthly loan calculator is a planning tool rather than a replacement for a lender’s dated settlement instructions.

Reconcile an illustrative difference

Assume remaining principal of 8,000, simple daily interest at an annual rate of 9.125% divided by 365, and ten days until settlement. Interest is 8,000 × 0.09125 / 365 × 10 = 20. If the agreement also specifies a 50 settlement charge, the illustrative total is 8,070. The fee is an example, not a claim that a particular jurisdiction permits or requires that charge.

Obtain an itemized quote

Ask for principal, accrued interest, charges and the quote’s validity date, then check the agreement and applicable local rules on early repayment. A calculator can help verify arithmetic but cannot remove contractual charges or arrange release of a vehicle lien. Keep the lender’s settlement confirmation and any separate ownership-release documents after payment.
