Why 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45
Minutes use a base of sixty, while decimal hours use a base of ten. Convert the notation before multiplying by an hourly rate.
Work hours →Convert a complete shift
From 09:00 to 17:15, subtracting a 30-minute break leaves 7 hours 45 minutes. Since 45 / 60 = 0.75, the decimal duration is 7.75 hours. At an illustrative ordinary rate of 20 per hour, multiplication gives 155. Using 7.45 instead gives 149, a difference of six caused entirely by the notation error.
Avoid premature rounding
For multiple days, keep the original minutes, sum them and convert the total to decimal hours. Two shifts of 7 hours 45 minutes total 15.5 hours. Rounding each down to seven hours before adding would instead produce fourteen. Any actual payroll-rounding policy must be considered separately under the applicable arrangements; the calculator does not establish such a policy.
Keep the original record alongside the total
A useful timesheet preserves start time, end time, break minutes and the calculated duration. If a payroll total differs, those fields help distinguish an input error from a conversion error or a separate pay rule. The time converter can verify the decimal representation, and the salary tool can perform a basic gross-pay estimate. Neither automatically applies overtime rates or decides whether a break should be paid.
