Does a random number range include both endpoints?

AI Calc · Updated

This random-number tool includes both the minimum and maximum. Counting the possible integers correctly is essential for interpreting probabilities.

Count the integers, not the gap

From 1 through 6 there are six possible integers, although 6−1 equals 5. The count for inclusive integer endpoints is maximum−minimum+1. Likewise, −2 through 2 contains −2, −1, 0, 1 and 2: five possibilities. Enter integer bounds and ensure that the maximum is not smaller than the minimum. Equal bounds describe one possible result, so every draw returns that value.

Understand a die-style draw

Setting minimum 1 and maximum 6 creates a draw from six equally weighted integers. The probability of a particular number on one draw is 1/6, approximately 16.67%. The probability of an even number is 3/6 = 1/2. A short run will not necessarily contain each value equally often; equal probability describes the model, not a promise about the next six outputs.

Respect the tool’s scope

The generator uses browser cryptographic randomness with rejection sampling to avoid a simple remainder bias. It returns one integer per draw, not a shuffled list or a statistical certification. For a classroom selection, decide in advance whether a selected person remains eligible for the next draw. If you need a complete no-repeat order, repeated independent clicks alone do not enforce that rule.
