Does a daily calorie gap predict weight loss in a straight line?

AI Calc · Updated

A maintenance-energy estimate is not a dynamic weight forecast. A calculated energy difference should not be presented as a guaranteed future change in kilograms.

Separate arithmetic from prediction

If estimated maintenance is 2200 kcal per day and recorded intake is 2000, the arithmetic difference is 200 kcal per day, or 1400 over seven days. This site does not convert that difference into a promised weight loss. Both energy expenditure and food records contain uncertainty, and the assumptions can change during the period you are trying to predict.

Why extending the line can mislead

Changes in body weight alter an input to the resting-energy equation. Changes in activity, food tracking, fluid balance and physiological adaptation can also affect observations. Several days without a lower scale reading do not, on their own, prove that the equation is broken. They are also not a reason to respond with an extreme restriction based only on calculator output.

Keep estimates and observations separate

Record the assumptions used for the estimate, then compare observations taken under similar conditions over time. An average can reduce the influence of individual fluctuations but cannot diagnose their cause. Personalized weight management or nutrition treatment needs the relevant health context. Use the resting-energy and average tools to understand the numbers, and obtain qualified guidance when an individual plan is needed.
