Flooring or edging? Do not confuse area with perimeter

AI Calc · Updated

Area measures a surface; perimeter measures its boundary. The same room needs different calculations for these two purchases.

Rectangle area →

Calculate a simple room

A rectangular room 4 metres wide and 5 metres long has area 4×5 = 20 square metres. Its perimeter is 2×(4+5) = 18 metres. Enter the width and length in metres in the rectangle calculator. Square metres are appropriate for a flat covering, while metres are appropriate for material running around the edge. They are not interchangeable units.

Adjust for the actual boundary

A doorway may remove part of the edging requirement, while alcoves can add boundary segments. Similarly, floor openings or fixed structures may change the area to cover. The calculator assumes one complete rectangle; it cannot inspect your floor plan. Draw and label the relevant boundary, subtract or add measured sections, and keep a separate list for area and edge calculations.

Keep waste separate from geometry

A 10% illustrative area allowance on 20 square metres gives 22 square metres, but the suitable allowance depends on product, pattern and installation requirements. Do not apply the same percentage blindly to every material. Packaging may require rounding up to full boxes or lengths. The geometric result is a starting quantity, not a supplier quote or a guarantee of how many packs the job will consume.
