How to split a restaurant bill after adding a tip
Decide which amount the tip applies to, add the tip to the bill and then divide the total by the number of people. Equal splitting is different from allocating each person’s own purchases.
Tip & split bill →Confirm the amount used as the base
The tip calculator multiplies the entered bill by the selected percentage, then divides the combined amount equally. It does not decide whether the tip should be based on a before-tax subtotal, nor does it identify an existing service charge. The appropriate treatment depends on the bill, venue and local practice rather than a universal percentage assumed by the tool.
Work through a four-person example
For a bill of 180 and a chosen 15% tip on that amount, the tip is 27 and the total is 207. Dividing by four gives 51.75 per person. If one diner ordered much less and the group wants a consumption-based split, create separate item totals instead. An equal-split calculation cannot infer those individual allocations from the combined bill.
Check the final payment before sending it
Look for a service charge or automatic gratuity already on the bill, so any additional amount is deliberate. When the total cannot be divided evenly into the currency’s payment units, allocate the remainder so all payments add back to the bill. The 15% input is an illustration, not a statement of what is required or customary in every country.
