How far is 0 K from 0°C? Understanding the Kelvin offset

AI Calc · Updated

Kelvin expresses absolute temperature. Its interval size matches Celsius, but its zero point is offset by 273.15.

Convert a few temperature points

Zero degrees Celsius equals 273.15 K, while 25°C equals 298.15 K. In the other direction, 300 K equals 26.85°C. The standard symbol is K, without a degree sign. Converting Celsius to Kelvin requires adding 273.15, not multiplying by 1.8; that multiplier belongs to the Fahrenheit relationship.

Understand the input boundary

Within the ordinary absolute-temperature model used by this tool, a value below 0 K, equivalent to below −273.15°C, is invalid. An input of −300°C is therefore rejected rather than treated as another ordinary low temperature. A conversion interface should not silently accept a value outside the model’s supported domain.

Check the scale required by a formula

Some physical equations require absolute temperature. Entering 25 as the Kelvin value for a 25°C condition would be incorrect; first convert it to 298.15 K. The scientific calculator can then evaluate the relevant arithmetic if the rest of the equation is known. Temperature conversion does not establish a material’s safe operating range, equipment tolerance or laboratory procedure. Those depend on the specific application and its authoritative technical information.
