Why payroll withholding differs from your final income tax
Money withheld from wages is a payment toward tax, while annual liability is the amount calculated under the applicable rules. Receiving a refund does not mean that the year’s tax liability was zero.
Income tax calculator →Build an annual reconciliation
Keep the amount already withheld separate from the final tax calculation. Some systems also use estimated payments or several reconciliation stages. The relevant procedure depends on the jurisdiction and your circumstances, not simply the language you use or the nationality printed on a document. Tax residence and the period covered by the return need to be established first.
Compare two payment histories
Suppose final annual tax is 4,800 and payroll withholding totals 5,400, with no other credits or outstanding adjustments. The difference is 600, potentially refundable. If withholding instead totals 4,200, the remaining amount is 600. In both examples annual liability remains 4,800. What changes is how much has already been paid, not the mathematical amount of tax generated by the stated annual calculation.
Know what the calculator does not import
The income-tax tool estimates tax under its supported annual rules. It does not read payslips, track withholding or reconstruct a payroll system’s cumulative monthly calculations. Multiple jobs, bonuses, cross-border income and special relief may require additional treatment. Check the tax authority’s instructions for the relevant year and reconcile your actual payment records separately. Do not subtract a withholding figure from income merely because it appeared as a deduction on a payslip.
