How many addresses are in /24 and /26? Start with the remaining bits

AI Calc · Updated

An IPv4 address contains thirty-two bits. The prefix identifies the network portion, leaving the remaining bits to determine the block size.

Convert bits into an address count

A /24 leaves eight bits, giving 2 to the power of 8, or 256 total addresses. A /26 leaves six bits, giving 64. A longer prefix therefore describes a smaller block. With appropriate alignment, one /24 block can be divided into four /26 blocks. The prefix is not a count of addresses by itself.

Check one concrete boundary

The address 192.168.1.130 with prefix /26 belongs to the block from 192.168.1.128 through 192.168.1.191. Its mask is 255.255.255.192. The calculator displays the network address, the block-ending address using the traditional broadcast label, the mask and the total address count. Those outputs help verify the block arithmetic.

Total addresses are not a host-allocation promise

Ordinary subnet discussions often subtract network and broadcast addresses, but /31 point-to-point links and /32 routes require different interpretation. Cloud platforms may reserve additional addresses as well. This tool does not certify the number a particular platform will let you assign. Check the applicable network design and service rules before provisioning. Address calculations and bandwidth calculations answer separate questions: a larger address block does not automatically provide a faster connection.
