Missed a monthly savings deposit? Recalculate from today’s balance
Once actual deposits differ from the plan, use the real balance and remaining months. Continuing the original contribution may leave a shortfall at the original deadline.
Savings goal calculator →Reset the starting point honestly
Enter the amount actually in the account, not the balance the old projection said should be there. Count the remaining full contribution periods and identify whether the next deposit is immediate or at month end. The savings-goal tool assumes end-of-month deposits, so a cash injection today belongs in the starting balance rather than being silently shifted into a later month.
Recalculate a zero-interest shortfall
A target of 6,000 over twelve months originally requires 500 each month. After six months, suppose only five deposits were made, leaving 2,500. With six months remaining, the gap is 3,500, requiring approximately 583.33 a month plus a small final rounding adjustment. Continuing with six payments of 500 would finish at 5,500 instead of the target.
Compare practical ways to catch up
Options include an immediate 500 top-up, a higher remaining monthly contribution or a later deadline. Do not ignore essential spending merely to preserve the original date. The illustration excludes interest and fees; an actual account should be recalculated using the selected rate convention. Make sure the final payments cover the exact gap rather than assuming a rounded monthly display always sums to the target.
