Radius or diameter? The mistake that quadruples circle area

AI Calc · Updated

The diameter crosses the whole circle; the radius goes from the center to the edge. Selecting the right known quantity matters as much as the number.

Use a 10-centimetre circle

If the diameter is 10 cm, the radius is 5 cm. Circumference is πd = 10π, approximately 31.4159 cm. Area is πr² = 25π, approximately 78.5398 cm². Select diameter in the circle tool and enter 10. Selecting radius instead would describe a circle with diameter 20 cm, not the object you measured.

Why the area error is fourfold

Using 10 as the radius gives 100π square centimetres, four times 25π. Circumference doubles because it is proportional to radius, while area quadruples because radius is squared. This is a useful diagnostic: if an area looks four times too large, recheck radius-versus-diameter interpretation before suspecting the value of π or changing rounding settings.

Measure the intended boundary

For a pipe, ring or rim, decide whether you need the inside or outside circle. Wall thickness means they are different. A diameter should pass through the center; a shorter chord across the object is not a diameter. Keep one consistent length unit, and use its square for area. The tool assumes a plane circle, so an oval or a perspective-distorted photograph needs a different model. A labelled sketch showing the center can make the intended input much clearer than an unannotated measurement.
