Average pay looks high? Compare the mean with the median

The mean and median describe different aspects of a dataset. An extreme value can separate them without either calculation being wrong.

Calculate both centers

Consider five hypothetical monthly amounts: 2000, 2200, 2400, 2600 and 20000. Their sum is 29200, so the mean is 5840. The middle value after sorting is 2400, the median. The mean is pulled upward by the largest amount, while the median still identifies the central ranked observation. The average calculator returns the mean, median and sum together.

Choose the summary for the question

The mean is useful when totals and equally weighted amounts matter, such as reconstructing total spending from a count and average. The median is useful for describing the middle position in a skewed distribution. Neither number describes everyone in the group. If the task is to budget the sum of all amounts, replacing the mean with the median would not preserve the total.

Keep the comparison consistent

Before comparing two groups, verify the same time period, currency, inclusion rules and weighting. A mixture of full-time and part-time observations can change both summaries. Do not remove a large value merely to make the mean look more typical; check whether it belongs to the defined population. Use standard deviation to explore spread, while retaining enough context to explain why the centers differ.
