Budgeting fuel for a road trip: estimate litres before multiplying by price
A fuel budget needs distance, an assumed consumption rate and a price per litre. Recording those assumptions makes the total easier to revise.
Fuel consumption →Work through an 800 km journey
At an assumed 6.5 L/100km, an 800 km trip requires 800 × 6.5 / 100 = 52 litres. At 1.7 currency units per litre, the fuel cost is 88.4. Enter distance 800, fuel 52 and price 1.7 in this site’s fuel tool to verify both the consumption rate and the cost.
Compare a less favorable consumption scenario
At 7.5 L/100km, the same route requires sixty litres and costs 102 at the same price. That is 13.6 more than the first scenario. The comparison is not a forecast of what the car will actually consume; it shows how a change in one assumption affects the budget. Keep the price unchanged when isolating the consumption effect.
Do not confuse fuel with the full trip cost
Tolls, parking, accommodation, vehicle rental and detours need separate allowances. Prices in different regions may use different currencies or gallon definitions, so align the units before combining them. The speed tool can estimate moving time from a whole-trip average, but does not automatically add traffic, rests or refueling stops. Keep those practical factors outside the simple fuel multiplication and add them explicitly to the travel plan.
