Why 1 square metre is 10000 square centimetres, not 100
Area contains two length dimensions. When a length unit changes by a factor of one hundred, the corresponding area factor is squared.

A square measuring 1 m by 1 m also measures 100 cm by 100 cm. Its area is therefore 10000 cm². An area of 2.5 m² converts to 25000 cm². Multiplying by only one hundred would understate the result by a factor of one hundred because it converts only one dimension.
Volume introduces a third dimension
One cubic metre is 100 cm × 100 cm × 100 cm, or 1000000 cm³. Since one cubic centimetre equals one millilitre, one cubic metre also equals 1000 litres. The area factor and the volume factor are different, even though they start from the same metre-to-centimetre relationship.
Select the right quantity category
Choose area or volume in the converter before selecting the source and target units. Do not substitute a length conversion for an area conversion, and do not interpret m² as two metres. For a room’s floor area, measure the dimensions and calculate the area first, then convert it. The unit converter cannot infer missing geometry. The area and volume calculators supply that separate geometric step, provided all their input dimensions use consistent units.
