How to add a 5% concrete allowance without accidentally adding 15.76%

AI Calc · Updated

A volume allowance increases the calculated volume. Increasing every dimension by the same percentage is a different operation.

Compare the two calculations

Starting with 2 m³, adding 5% gives 2.1 m³. If length, width and thickness are each multiplied by 1.05, the volume is multiplied by 1.05 cubed, approximately 1.157625. The result becomes about 2.31525 m³, an increase of 15.76%, not 5%. This distinction follows from multiplying three dimensions together.

Understand the allowance field

The calculator first multiplies length, width and thickness, then multiplies the volume by one plus the allowance percentage. It does not expand each dimension independently. Choose the allowance in light of actual placement conditions and supplier guidance. If the design thickness itself changes, alter the thickness input rather than treating that change as a waste percentage.

Avoid counting contingency twice

Entering deliberately inflated dimensions and then adding a large allowance can duplicate the same contingency. Keep both the geometric volume and the adjusted quantity in the estimate so the ordering decision can be reviewed. The percentage calculator can verify the additional amount, while the volume tool checks the base geometry. Neither determines concrete strength, structural safety or delivery sequencing. Those remain separate parts of a properly specified project.
