What does 20% body fat mean? The other 80% is not all muscle

Body-fat percentage, fat mass and fat-free mass describe related quantities. Understanding the distinction matters more than displaying extra decimal places.

Turn the percentage into mass

For an illustrative body weight of 75 kg and an estimated body-fat percentage of 20%, fat mass is 75 × 0.20 = 15 kg. The remaining 60 kg is fat-free mass. That includes muscle, bone, organs, water and other non-fat components. Calling the entire remainder muscle mass would mislabel what the subtraction actually measures.

The same percentage can represent a different amount

At 60 kg, a 20% estimate corresponds to 12 kg of fat. Percentages compare relative shares, while kilograms describe absolute amounts. If weight changes while the percentage stays the same, estimated fat mass also changes. The percentage calculator can check this relationship without making assumptions about why the body weight differs.

Uncertainty carries into the derived numbers

A two-percentage-point error at 75 kg corresponds to 1.5 kg in estimated fat mass. Producing a value in kilograms does not make the underlying percentage more accurate. The body-fat tool explains the output of a circumference model; it does not establish a target weight or treatment plan. Interpret changes with the original measurements and appropriate individual context.
