Simple ROI measures the total return over the holding period. Investments with different durations cannot be compared fairly by treating that percentage as if each were earned in one year.

A negative ROI is a valid result and should not be replaced with zero. Establish whether proceeds are gross or already net of charges, then use one consistent accounting convention.
